We have lost an extraordinary man, Haskell Wexler. He lived 93 years full of making movies and speaking up for so many people without a voice. He was also the Director of From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks and the Director of Photography, at aged 93, of To Begin the World Over Again: the Life of Thomas Paine, the last theatrical piece that he filmed. He worked with us because he believed in the stories of Harry Bridges and Thomas Paine, and because he was, above all else, a great storyteller. We miss him but we also smile at the memory of this kind, feisty, visionary man.
Sarah Nash Gates
We have also lost a great friend to both our Projects, Sarah Nash Gates. As Director of the School of Drama at the University of Seattle she organized the first ever performances of From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks and brought me up to perform many times. As the costume designer that was her trade she designed my Thomas Paine costume and organized the first performance of To Begin the World Over Again: the Life of Thomas Paine in Seattle. She was a great friend to me and a great member of the Bridges Project Advisory Board. I will think of her each time that I put on my beautiful costume and go out to tell an audience about Thomas Paine.
